Air O Swiss Model 2055D is touted as both a humidifier and air cleaner I purchased for humidification as the design of the unit moves to little air to be very effective as an air cleaner Initially the unit made an annoying clicking sound as the discs rotated This sound was reported by others and appears to be inherent in the plastic gear mechanism relying on the rather light weight of the unit bearing down on the gear to engage movement After a few weeks and some silicone stopcock grease the clicking was gone and the unit is quite quiet As for humididy I have always laughed at the square footage ratings of these units as the cubic feet at a particular temperture would be the most consistent rating for all units With that said the area being humidified is 550 ft sq with 10ft ceiling thus 5500 cubic feet The unit has a hard time keeping humidity at 40 in this room at outdoor tempertures below 32F I ve used only RO water in the unit and it has had no fouling nor deposit build up no dust build up on the discs either thus I am dubious of it air cleaning
Regardless the cleaning cycle lights still illuminate as they are on a timer rather than a conductive cell Overall the unit is well made thus my positive rating There are many less expensive units such as the Honeywell towers that do just as well humidifying but last only a season or two

I bought this unit hoping that it could keep the humidity in my small Colorado apartment someplace around 50 to keep my instruments happy and healthy I figured this might be worth the price if it worked but unfortunately the unit went back to the store the second day I had it On day one I left it running on the lower quiet overnight in a largely sealed apartment and according to both the built in hygrometer and a separate one it wasn t even able to hit 40 humidity Unfortunately the stronger setting is also as loud as my dishwasher and thus not suitable for constant use I m also concerned about cleaning it and frankly if I m going to pay 300 I used a coupon I m going to expect a great deal more results

If the air cleaner approach is required I d recommend the Venta line as I used their middle of the line model without problems for around a year It too can t reliably put out enough humidity to control humidity changes and they lack any kind of hygrometer switch but they re much more quiet and the model I had was nearly 150 cheaper

So nice try Air O Swiss but a machine this expensive is going to need to be a great deal quieter and effective
